A total of 12 Webelos Scouts from Cub Scout Pack 508 in Ham Lake formed an expedition to BSA’s Northern Tier to participate in Webelos Okpik Weekend in January. Despite temperatures dipping down to 26 below zero, the Scouts enjoyed a wide variety of winter activities including hiking, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, ice fishing, boot hockey, dog sledding, and outdoor cooking. The Scouts also explored snow shelters, known as quinzee’s, left on the lake by overnight campers. Okpik (which is Inuit for snowy owl) is the National Boy Scout Camp’s winter program which compliments the many summer expeditions from the camp using the largest canoe fleet in North America. The Webelos Okpik Weekend is designed to introduce Cub Scouts to winter camping and the programs offered at Northern Tier.
